Staff Motivation

The challenge

This year, 600 of Europe's top athletes from 45 countries competed in the European Athletics Indoor Championship for the first time at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.  

500 volunteers staffed the event with a variety of roles ranging from drivers and programme sellers to media centre assistants.  

The event organisers needed a way to motivate the volunteers and thank them for the fantastic job they were doing helping with the Championship.

The solution

Around 5000 text messages were sent out to inspire and encourage the volunteers over the three day event.  

Brian Stocks, Championships Director, said,
 
"The Championship was a great success and we couldn't have done it without all the help from our volunteers. Text is such a simple, but effective way of motivating the volunteers and making them feel a big part of the event.  

"On the Monday after the event, the European Athletics President, Hansjorg Wirz said that it was "Best Ever Indoor Championship" and we sent a message to all of our volunteers to thank them for being a part of that."
