Glossary - Mobile communications made easy


3G - 3rd Generation.  Faster mobile phone connections which access services that would normally require broadband like video. 3G mobile phones can be used in Europe, Japan- and North American.

DTMF - Dual Tone Multi-Frequency - a system that identifies which key has been pressed on a touch-tone telephone - for example it can tell if you press 1 to speak to an advisor. 

EDGE - Enhanced Data GSM Environment, read the definition for GSM - it does the same things, faster.

EMS - Extended Message Service, allows for more than 160 character SMS, icons.

GPRS - General Packet Radio Service - with this the internet or WAP is always on, like broadband at home.  It is a little faster than GSM and billed by file size, not the length of the call.

GSM - Global System for Mobile - The digital network that mobile phones use to make calls and send text messages. The data connection to the mobile internet is a phone call and billed by the length of the call.

IMEI - International Mobile Equipment Identifier - A 15 digit number that identifies the an individual phone to a network operator.

IVR
- Interactive Voice Response - When you press 1 to speak to an advisor, it's an IVR that's putting you through to the right place.

J2ME - Java Micro Edition, allows java to run on mobile phones.

Java - a programming language.

MMS Message
- a multi-media.html message - a way to send pictures, sounds or video to or from a mobile phone.

Network provider - the company providing your mobile phone calls - for example Vodafone, Orange or O2.

PDA - Personal Digital Assistant.  Mobile gadget combining email, text, voice calls with word processing and spreadsheets.

SIM - Subscribe Identity Module.  A card that contains your mobile phone information.

SMS Text Message - SMS stands for Short Message Service, often known simply as 'texts'.  They are just characters.

Text Short Numbers - A five digit code which is easier for people to remember when they are sending a text.  It's a useful way to respond to campaigns.

Text Broadcast - Sending the same text message to many mobile phones at the same time.

Voice broadcast - Sending the same voice message to many mobile phones at the same time.  Rapide can deliver to landlines too.

Voice Message - A recorded messages sent to one or to thousands of mobile phones.  It can play to the customer when the phone is answered, or sent to the voicemail service for the customer to listen to later.

VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol - Using the internet to transmit telephone signals - which means you can have a conversation over the internet.

WAP - Wireless Application Protocol - allows you to browse the internet using a mobile phone.Content Required
