Live Event Text Messages – Are there any questions?

The challenge

The Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE) provides a free service for all of Scotland's students to encourage enterprising spirit and skills, and help start-up companies become the businesses of tomorrow. They hold events throughout the year, many open to students, lecturers and business people across the country.

The National Student Enterprise Summit was an open event held at Caird Hall in Dundee on Wednesday 12th March. The event included talks from James Caan, Frank Dick OBE and Ken Hames. The SIE wanted the attendees to ask the speakers live questions at the event but knew using traditional methods of a microphone would not be a viable option. They asked Rapide to find them the solution they needed.


The solution

Rapide set the Scottish Institute for Enterprise up with a text service to use at their live event. Almost everybody has a mobile phone so it was the most obvious tool to use and using text is immediate so the speakers could respond to the questions straight away.

The service was simple. When the attendees had a question for a specific speaker they would text a short code number, starting the message with the speaker’s name e.g. JAMES for James Caan. The messages went straight to a live web page where SIE staff selected questions for the speakers from the list.

The attendees received a text reply saying, ‘Thanks for your question! It may be chosen by SIE staff to ask the relevant speaker. Enjoy the rest of the Summit!’
